Bar Code Scanner - If bar code numbershave been entered in the inventory area, a single bar code may be printed for one item, or all barcodes may be printed. A series of barcodes may also be printed, starting and ending at any bar code numbers entered in the configurationscreen.
If a bar code is read that is not in inventory, BCSS identifies it as a new item and presents the new-item-entry window. After the new item is entered, the New-Sale Screen is opened in the background. Clicking on the barcode again adds the new item into the new invoice.
If the barcode is found in inventory, the New-Sale Screen is presented.
Barcodes can only be read when no edit windows are in the foreground. The foreground must be the main display. It does not matter which area is chosen in the main display. The New-Sale Screen is an edit screen, so if the user wants to add several items to the invoice, it will need to be done with the New-Sale Screen in the background. This is not a problem, because the New-Sale Screen opens in the background and will not come to the foreground unless the user clicks on it.
After all items being sold have been read by the barcode reader, clicking on the New-Sale Screen brings it to the foreground where the buyer's name and other information may be entered.
Some barcodes are not readable for one reason or another. In this case the user can always type the 11 digit barcode number on the keyboard. When the user starts typing numbers, a dialog box pops open recording the keystrokes. When a correctly formatted barcode has been entered, the dialog box disappears, and the new sale process begins.
Users will need to set their scanners to not transmit the check digit of a read bar code. The scanner can be configured this way using page 14 of the PSC200 bar code programming manual.
Most items have UPC-a barcodes. Books use a format that looks like UPC-a but have 13 numbers instead of 11, and almost always have a supplement. Some inventory will have its own barcodes. If the barcodes are UPC-a, BCSS can read and use them. If not, BCSS generates and prints barcodes that it can read.
BCSS can be made to generate UPC-a or UPC-e barcodes with supplement if desired. The PSC scanner can read many formats besides the two UPC varieties. Once a few settings are made to use UPC-a, no further adjustments are necessary.
In the new FoxPRo Edition of BCSS, the Zebra 2844 Thermal Printer will support these barcodes: Code 128B/C Serial Shipping Container Code, Code 128 (Auto-selects mode A, B or C), Interleaved 2 of 5 (default), Code 39 (w/extended), Code 93, UPC-A and UPC-E, EAN8 and EAN13, Postnet 5, 9,11 & 13 digit, CodaBar, Plessey (MSI-1) with mod. 10 check digit, L MSI-3 with mod. 10 check digit.
