Where to Get Help

Test the printer first: Go to Control Panel, Devices and Printers. Click on the printer listing. (It may be necessary to wait 2-3 minutes for the computer to respond.) If there are print jobs listed, click on Printer (upper left) and cancel all documents. Click on Printer again and select Properties. (Wait 2-3 minutes for a response.) Click on Print Test Page. If print fails, call Epson (free) Support: 562-276-1314.

If the test print succeeds -

If the printer was purchased from BCSS: For free support, read this page in its entirety. The solution to most printer problems are written here. If the problem persists, send an email to support with a description of the problem.

Note: If the Epson printer behavior has changed, check BCSS settings (File, Program Setup, Printers). If they are the same, reinstall the printer driver from http://www.resell4.me/APDMANE_M.exe

Note: BCSS apparently works with the Epson M-188A, the TM6000II and the TM-T88V receipt printers even though BCSS has not been specifically configured for those printers.

Save paper by skipping page margins. Go to Control Panel > Printers and right click on the Epson. Select Printing Preferences then Document Settings. Click on Paper Conservation. Select 'Top & Bottom' to eliminate top and bottom margins. Under 'Paper Conservation' select None. If the printer is feeding extra paper, see troubleshooting.

Adjust Print Position. In the Control Panel, right click on the Epson listing and select Printing Preferences select the Layout tab and make adjustments as needed.

Adjust Print Size. In BCSS, go to File then Program Setup then Printers. In the Print Receipts section, change the Header and Text Fonts as needed.

Messages on Receipts. Any string of 50 characters or less entered into the Email and Website fields in Program Setup (General tab) will appear on 3" sales receipts. You could enter messages, like 'All Sales Final', for example.

Print Copies. In the Control Panel, right click on the Epson listing and select Printing Preferences. On the Main screen, set the desired # of copies to print.

Printer Setup - The TM-U220 Manual contains colored illustrations of procedures like inserting/replacing paper/ribbons, test printing, etc.: http://www.resell4.me/epson-manual.pdf (Click Open to open the manual in the browser or click Save to save the manual to your PC for future reference.)

  1. Make sure the printer is plugged in.
  2. Make sure the printer is turned on, has a ribbon and no paper jams.
  3. Verify that the green light is on (if you printer has one) and run a test print.
  4. Use a standard USB cable (not shipped) to connect the printer to the PC.

The Windows hardware Wizard should detect the new hardware and ask for a CD.

  5. Insert the printer installation CD into the DVD drive. If a CD is not available, see below for downloading and installing the printer driver.
  6. If the cash drawer is being used, connect it to the receipt printer.
  7. In BCSS, go to File, Program Setup, Printers.
  8. In the Print Receipts section, check 'Receipt Printer' and select the Epson printer from the drop-down box immediately below 'Receipt Printer'.
  9. In the Print Receipts Section, the Header font setting may need to be lowered for a long store name.

Printer Installation (Epson Tech Support)

Go to Start then Control Panel then Printers. If the Epson is not listed, install the printer driver. (See below)

Install The Epson Printer Driver | Epson Support: (562) 276-1314

If the printer doesn't print after it has been plugged in, connected via USB to the computer, and loaded with paper, go to Start, Control Panel, Printers to see if the Epson printer is listed. If not follow these steps to install the printer driver:

Note: The older driver (http://www.resell4.me/APDMANE_M worked with previous versions of Windows through XP. It does not work with Vista/Win7. The following instructions are for the new driver and Vista/Win7:

  1. Be sure the printer is connected to the PC with a functional cord, is online and has paper.
  2. Verify the port setting: Go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and right click on the Epson printer. Click on the Ports Tab and verify that the ESD or USB port is selected. (Select Parallel for older models.)
  3. Read this text file http://www.resell4.me/epson-readme.txt.
  4. Download the Printer Driver Installation manual: http://www.resell4.me/epson-driver-manual.pdf.
  5. Download the printer driver for Vista/Win7: http://www.resell4.me/ADT210E.exe. (Please be patient. This is a large file, 34MB.)
  6. Save the file to the Desktop.
  7. Double click on that file and choose to unzip to the Desktop.
  8. Double click on the file to start the driver installation.
    1. Choose a Standard Installation.
    2. Select the driver for EPSON TM-U220 Receipt.
    3. Set the Port Type to USB. (Older models use Parallel.)
    4. Do not check 'Set as Default Printer'.
    5. Ignore the notes about 'customer display' (pole display).

    6. Follow the prompts to run the installation. Verify the settings on the last screen before installing. (On some computers the installation procedure appears to stall at the beginning. Give it a minute to get going.)
    7. Finish the installation. The computer will reboot.
    8. Dip switches are located under a cover on the bottom of the printer. These should not be changed with the help of Epson support. If changes have been made there, the settings should be confirmed by Epson. The instructions do say that the dip switch settings should be set to parallel for USB use. Don't change them. The printer works as it should with factory defaults.
    9. The printer has a couple of receptacles one the back panel, one marked DM and one DMD. DM is for integrated display module (Pole Display). DMD is network-interface size. There is nothing in the Epson docs about using it. Nothing should be plugged into either.
  9. Go to Start > Control Panel > Printers. The Epson printer name should be exactly "EPSON TM-U220 Receipt".
  10. Right click on the Epson printer and select Properties. These should be the settings on the Version tab for Vista/Win7:
  11. Install Version APD Ver4.12
  12. EPSON TM-U220 ReceiptE4 Version 5, 0, 7, 0
  13. EPSON Status API Version 4, 3, 14, 0
  14. If the versions don't match, use the correct printer driver.
  15. Right click on the printer listing. Select 'Printer properties'.
  16. Click on Print Test Page. This message should appear:

  17. The receipt should print out.
  18. If the printer isn't working, right click on the listing for it and select Troubleshooting. (requires an Internet connection)

At this point, BCSS is not yet involved in troubleshooting the printer. Please call Epson for assistance. (562) 276-1314. Our involvement will begin after the Epson can successfully print a test page and our support will be for configuring BCSS for the Epson and making sure that the program prints receipts correctly.

  19. Open BCSS.
  20. Click on File on the Main Menu (then Program Setup):

    Click on Printers:

  21. To the right of Print Receipts, select Receipt Printer and use the drop-down menu and select Epson.

  22. Click Save and OK.
  23. Select a sale in the Sales Work Area and click on Print (lower left).

Control Paper Feed

Paper feed is controlled in printer settings in the Control Panel:

  1. Click on Start then Control Panel.
  2. Click on Devices and Printers (Printers in XP).
  3. Right click on the Epson printer.
  4. Select Printer Properties.

(On one test computer, it took several seconds for the Properties Screen to open.)

  5. Click on the Advanced tab.
  6. Click on Printing Defaults.
  7. Choose the Document Settings tab.
  8. Under Page Source set Document[NoFeed,Cut]. (Using Page Feed settings may cause problems.)
  9. If these settings don't work, click on the Custom option and try various settings.
  10. On the same Document-Settings screen, Send Command and Logo Printing should be set to 'Do not send'.
  11. On the same Document-Settings screen, Cash Drawer, both drawers should be set to 'Do not open' because BCSS will control drawer opening.
  12. Click Apply and OK to exit setup.
  13. Test the settings in BCSS by printing sales receipts.

Purchasing the Printer and Roll Paper

The Printer is available from BCSS and includes free shipping. It does not include the USB cable. (Any standard USB cable may be used.)

Purchase 3" rolls of impact paper from Markat CC, markatcc@att.net, Toll Free 888-947-7734, or buy them at your local office supply store.

Sample Receipt

The store information entered In BCSS (Program Setup, General tab) will appear on the sales receipt.

The email-address and website fields can be blank or they can contain any information, like "All Sales Final", "Thank you for shopping with us", etc.

Go to Control Panel, Printers. Right click on 'VENDOR THERMAL PRINTER' and select Properties for settings like printing multiple copies of the receipt and making the print lighter/darker, etc. (See the printer manual.)

The Epson TM-U220 Receipt Printer is a dot matrix receipt (impact) printer that prints 3"-wide receipts on 1-ply, 2-ply or 3-ply roll paper. The printer may or may not have a 'take-up journal' which winds the copy(ies) onto a spool.

BCSS has been configured to work with Logic Controls' CR3000E Cash Drawer and this printer. The printer attaches to the PC with a standard USB cable and the cash drawer attaches to the printer. When a receipt is printed, the cash drawer opens. (The drawer may also be opened by pressing F12 in BCSS.)

BCSS is compatible with these receipt printers (and possibly others): POS-X, EASYSET A9 MiniPrinter (some odd characters possible), Epson TM-U220 and TM-T88IV, Star SP212, TSP600/700, TSP 613 and DP8340, Samsung SRP350, SNBC BTP-2002NP.
