What is your shop's largest expense? Labels? Rent? How about consignment software?
With very few exceptions, the plan of software vendors is to make more money from service fees, add-on fees, upgrades, multiple license or networking fees, optional modules and price increases than the original cost of the software!
Honestly, the fees were so many and varied we couldn't fit them all here is a readable format. Here's a link to a table to illustrate them all and the total costs of owning some software programs. The figures are based upon 5 licenses. If your business is successful, you might well be using 5 or more computers within 5 years or perhaps you already are.
Special notes:
On their website Liberty claims they 'will not be undersold'. They are clearly the most expensive and their statement is also a clear indication of their intent to deceive.
Each vendor has price traps set:
CCE - If you don't pay $60/year for support, it will cost you $45 to call them each time you need help. Also, 'add-on modules' have to be purchased at $60 each to bring CCE features up to a competitive level.
Liberty - If you want to sell your software to someone else, they want 50% of the sales proceeds. They charge $35 for a replacement manual. $199 for a parallel cable that sells for $8 elsewhere, $199 for a QuickBooks module (included in BCSS). The second 'home copy' license is not free. It is $295. Hardware prices are twice that of those available elsewhere and shipping charges are tacked on to orders.
Consignpro - $40 for printer support. $69 for a database refreshing. $200 data conversion. $75/HOUR tag customization. $295 for each network license. Gets a kick back for recommending FormPlus for tags. Hidden shipping charges tacked on to hardware orders.
Stoker - Didn't elect to pay for annual support? Ok. $25 per phone call.
Are we just bashing our competitors in hopes of discrediting them and making a sale? No. We see their websites all the time. We know how difficult it is to compare software programs to begin with but it's even more difficult to unearth the true cost of owning their software. This information truly is offered in the spirit of full disclosure, fair pricing and fair play. _________________ Steve Henning
