What is RAM Memory?
RAM is short for Random Access Memory.
Computers store data permanently on the hard drive. Relative to BCSS these are the data files commonly stored in C:\Program Files\BCSS. (The path on your PC may be different.)
While you are using BCSS, the program BCSS and the functions you perform and the data you use are stored in temporary RAM memory where your computer can access and manipulate data and functions about 100 times faster than if it were to operate from the hard drive.
If you have no other programs open than BCSS, your computer must still run a very huge software program called Windows. Windows is the 'operating system' for your computer. If you only have 128MB (megabytes) of RAM, a good portion of that is already being used by Windows. To make BCSS run faster (as the number of consignors, inventory items, sales etc increases), you'll need to increase the amount of RAM.
How much memory do I need?
If you have no other programs open while using BCSS, the program will operate perfectly with only several hundred entries for consignors, inventory, sales etc. As these numbers grow, the computer will take long periods of time to access various parts of the program and perform functions. An operation with 25,000 inventory items might want as much as 1GB (gigabyte) of RAM for fast performance.
Upgrading Memory
Upgrading RAM is easy and relatively inexpensive. Because there are several types of RAM (and only one correct for your PC), and because installing memory chips requires some degree of skill, it's best to take the PC to a service department (preferably from where the PC was purchased so as to not void the warranty) which can install additional memory.
